An unincorporated area within Woodbridge Township, Avenel real estate is a census-designated place. The population as of the 2000 census was 17,552. Avenel is a coastal city and has four basic neighborhoods. Parts of the city are historical and this, along with the areas that are near water are the main places for recreational activities. Bitting Coal and Feed Depot. Avenel is the location of the New Jersey Department of Corrections, which provides employment for many residents.
