About Avenel
An unincorporated area within Woodbridge Township, Avenel real estate is a census-designated place. The population as of the 2000 census was 17,552. Avenel is a coastal city and has four basic neighborhoods. Parts of the city are historical and this, along with the areas that are near water are the main places for recreational activities. Many residents of Avenel are of Italian, Polish, Irish, Hungarian, German and African descent. The area is quite diverse and approximately a quarter of the residents were born in another country. The residents of Avenel real estate are served by the Woodbridge Township School District. Avenal is one of ten communities within Woodbridge Township. The other communities include Colonia, Fords, Hopelawn, Iselin, Keasbey, Menlo Park Terrace, Port Reading, Sewaren and Woodbridge Proper. These communities are the formation of Woodbridge Township in both population and area. It is the sixth-largest municipality in New Jersey.
Avenel has a train station with limited service. The train service is provided by North Jersey Coast Line, New Jersey Transit and Amtrak Northeast Corridor. The train offers service to Newark, New York, Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Boston. This is one of the attractive options of choosing Avenel homes for sale. Many people enjoy the small town atmosphere provided by living here and commute to work in other areas. In addition, the proximity to big city amenities is another advantage.

Bitting Brewing Company was the first operating brewery in Woodbridge Township since prohibition was repealed in 1933. It is located in a 100-year old building that was the site of the J.J. Bitting Coal and Feed Depot. Avenel is the location of the New Jersey Department of Corrections, which provides employment for many residents.
