It has been named as a competitor for the title of one of the “Best Places to Live in the United States” by Money Magazine in 2005 and 2007. The area of Old Bridge was originally Madison Township, which was incorporated in 1869. The name was changed in 1975. This was mainly to avoid confusing Old Bridge with the borough of Madison in Morris County. Old Bridge real estate was originally home to the Lenni Lenape Native Americans.
Residents of Old Bridge real estate have a number of roadways that provide access to other areas. The Garden State Parkway as well as U.S. Routes 9, 18, 34 and 35 and County Routes 516, 520, 527 and 615 provide transportation. The New Jersey Turnpike is just outside the township near the East Brunswick Township and not far from Monroe Township. Many were built between 1970 and 1994 with some having been constructed between 1940 and 1969.
