About Piscataway
Piscataway homes for sale are located in an area that was originally settled by the Quakers and Baptists in 1666. This was when the township was first formed and it was incorporated in 1798, although the original settlement called Piscawaytown was located in the area that is today Edison Township. The community is the fifth oldest in New Jersey and is important to the formation of the seacoast of the Atlantic that led to forming the United States. Sections of Piscataway Township were used to form Raritan Township in 1870 and South Plainfield Township in 1926. Piscataway Township real estate includes historic villages as well.
New Market, Randolphville, North Stelton and Fieldville are historic areas. The township of 56,044 has a number of major roads that provide access to several areas of the county and state. County roads 501, 514 and 529 as well as Route 18 and Interstate 287 are primary routes. The New Jersey Turnpike is also accessible from Piscataway.

As part of the history of this area, the name Piscataway is from the original European settlers. They were from the Piscataqua River, which was the defining point between New Hampshire and Maine. The name comes from Pisgeu, which means ‘dark night’ and awa, which is ‘Place of.’ The residents of Piscataway enjoy the proximity of many nearby cities, such as Manhattan, Newark, New York City, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, D.C. Many residents choose Piscataway as their home and commute to jobs in these areas.
