South Plainfield was incorporated in 1926. The area was known as New Brooklyn until approximately 1887 when the name was changed to South Plainfield as a result of the proximity to Plainfield, New Jersey, which was a leading social and economic area of New Jersey. The railroad was extended to this area resulting in a growth in population.
Today residents of South Plainfield residents may enjoy a variety of recreational and entertainment opportunities. The South Plainfield Tennes Club is a small park where a variety of activities are enjoyed. The South Plainfield Country Club includes an 18-hole regulation golf course for golfers of all skill levels. The Staten Island Paintball Center is nearby. The Drake House Museum is a historic house museum, which was Washington’s headquarters in 1777. Kehoe’s Carousel is located in Woodbridge and provides a top source of entertainment for residents and visitors.
